CJD and vCJD Timeline

This catastrophe could have been avoided, as with the ones before it.
In fact, we
ve counted 19
lost opportunities where action could have been taken in order to lessen or even avert the exposure of haemophiliacs to vCJD.

Background:

For 10 whole years (between July '87 & July '97) around 101 batches of BPL's Factor VIII and PFC’s Z8 were gradually released by the NHS to almost 4,000 patients in the United Kingdom.  Most of the recipients were persons with haemophilia or bleeding disorders.  The 101 batches were later deemed to be potentially contaminated with vCJD - since the products were made from plasma donated by people who later went on to develop the disease.

Haemophilic patients are now deemed to be at increased risk of carrying variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) because they were treated with UK-sourced factor VIII, factor IX, or antithrombin III plasma products.  Since 2004, these haemophiliacs are sadly considered "at risk" of vCJD for Public Health purposes and have been entered onto the ‘At Risk’ register by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
