Slowly, Slowly Catchy Monkey is effectively the absolute opposite of a knee jerk reaction. The phrase is an anglicisation of “softly, softly catchee monkey” which Lord Baden-Powell (founder of the Boy Scout movement) learnt from the people of Ghana.
The idiom originates from the time of British colonialism, where officers often aspired to successfully capturing a monkey to keep as a pet. The soldiers were never patient enough, so the locals taught them how to do it. In a clearing in the jungle they placed a partially covered box of fruit and fixed it to the ground. The basket was covered, except for a small opening which was wide enough for a monkey's hand and forearm.
A great deal of patience and stealth was required before a monkey would visit to investigate the box of fruit. Once the monkey had put their hand into the basket and caught hold of a piece of fruit, the fist would be too big for the opening. The monkey could at any time choose to let go of the fruit and safely retrive the hand, but their obsession with taking the fruit prevented them from freeing their hand. The officers, were thus able to walk right up to the monkey and capture it without struggle.
